Download and Install Microsoft 365 on Your Personal Device
Introduction
Microsoft 365 provides access to productivity applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, Teams, and OneDrive. Current Lakeland University students, faculty, and staff can install Microsoft 365 apps on their personal devices using their Lakeland email account and password.
Follow the steps below to download, install, and activate Microsoft 365 on your personal computer. Microsoft currently provides installation through the Microsoft 365 portal at m365.cloud.microsoft.
Step 1: Prepare Your Computer
Before installing Microsoft 365:
- Ensure your device is connected to a reliable internet connection.
- Verify that your computer meets Microsoft's current system requirements.
- Windows 11
- A supported version of macOS
- If you have an older trial version of Microsoft Office installed, you may be prompted to remove it before installing Microsoft 365 Apps.
Step 2: Access the Microsoft 365 Portal

Open your preferred web browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari).

Navigate to the Microsoft 365 portal:

Step 3: Sign In with Your Lakeland Account
- Click Sign In if prompted.
- Enter your Lakeland email address (for example,
username@lakeland.edu) and select Next.
- Choose Work or School Account if prompted.
- Enter your Lakeland password and select Sign In.
- Complete any required Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) verification steps.
Step 4: Download Microsoft 365
After signing in:
- Select Install apps in the upper-right corner of the page.
- If you do not see the Install apps button, select Apps from the left navigation menu first.
- Choose Install apps > Microsoft 365 apps. Microsoft documents this as the current installation path for work and school accounts.
- The installer file will begin downloading to your computer.
Step 5: Install Microsoft 365
- Locate the downloaded installer file (typically in your Downloads folder).
- Double-click the installer file to start the installation.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
- Allow the installation to complete. Depending on your internet connection and device performance, this may take several minutes.
Step 6: Activate Microsoft 365
- Open any Microsoft 365 application, such as Word or Excel.
- When prompted, sign in using your Lakeland email address and password.
- Follow any additional activation or setup prompts.
Once activation is complete, your Microsoft 365 applications will be ready to use.
Step 7: Start Using Microsoft 365
You now have access to Microsoft 365 applications on your personal device.
For the best experience, we recommend saving your files to your Lakeland OneDrive account. This provides:
- Automatic cloud backup
- Access to files from any device
- Easy file sharing and collaboration
- Recovery options for accidentally deleted or overwritten files
Additional Notes
- Your Microsoft 365 license remains active while you are an enrolled student or active employee of Lakeland University.
- Depending on your assigned Microsoft 365 license, you may be able to install Microsoft 365 apps on multiple personal devices.
- If your enrollment or employment with Lakeland University ends, access to Microsoft 365 desktop applications and cloud services may be removed.
